What do you need done?

3–4 visits over 2–4 weeks

Root canal: the infected nerve inside the tooth is cleaned out and sealed, then a cap protects the tooth.

Tap a number on the line to see that visit.

Typical for most patients. Dr. Atre confirms the number of visits after seeing your tooth and X-ray.

      Pain, decay and check-ups

      1. Two dental staff in masks cleaning a patient's teeth

        Check-up & cleaning

A look at every tooth and your gums, then cleaning and polishing. The hard yellow layer that brushing can't remove (called tartar) is gently scraped off. Most people find it a little ticklish, not painful.

Usually 1 visit, about 30–45 minutes. Come back every 6 months.

      2. A patient in protective glasses in the dental chair while a dentist works on a tooth

A cavity or a broken edge: filling

The decayed or broken part is cleaned away and the hole is filled with a tooth-coloured material that sets hard. You may get a numbing injection first so you don't feel it.

Usually 1 visit, 30–60 minutes. A very deep cavity sometimes needs a second visit.

      3. A dentist in a mask beside a patient lying back in the dental chair

        Bad tooth pain: root canal

When decay reaches the soft nerve inside a tooth, it hurts and can swell. A root canal cleans out that nerve, disinfects the inside and seals it, so you keep the tooth instead of losing it. It is done with numbing; most people say it feels like a long filling.

Usually 3–4 visits over 2–4 weeks, including the cap at the end.

      4. A dentist in a mask and cap leaning over a patient during a procedure

Removing a tooth, including wisdom teeth

For a tooth that is broken beyond repair, loose, or a wisdom tooth (the last back tooth) that is stuck or keeps getting infected. The area is numbed first. You go home with gauze to bite on and simple aftercare instructions.

1 visit, plus a short check about a week later.

      Replacing weak or missing teeth

      1. Teaching models of teeth and jaws on a clinic shelf

A weak tooth or a gap: caps and bridges

A cap (also called a crown) is a tooth-shaped cover fixed over a weak or root-canal-treated tooth. A bridge fills a gap: a false tooth held by caps on the teeth on either side. Both are made to measure, so there is a wait while they are made.

Cap: usually 2 visits, 1–2 weeks apart. Bridge: 2–3 visits over 1–3 weeks.

      2. A cut-away teaching model showing an implant screw in the jaw between two natural teeth

        A missing tooth: implant

An implant is a small metal screw placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. It acts as a new root; after the bone heals around it, a new tooth is fixed on top. It takes the longest of all treatments because the bone needs months to heal.

Usually 4 visits over 3–6 months, most of it healing time at home.

      3. Gloved hands holding a partial denture frame

        Many teeth missing: dentures

Dentures are removable false teeth, a full set or a few on a frame. They are built step by step from measurements of your mouth, with a trial before the final set so the look and bite feel right.

Usually 4–5 visits over 3–5 weeks.

      Straightening teeth

      1. Gloved hands holding a teeth model with braces next to a dental tool

        Crooked or gapped teeth: braces

Braces are small brackets and a wire that slowly move teeth into line. Straightening teeth like this is called orthodontics. It is a long, steady process with short adjustment visits.

Usually 12–24 months, with a short visit every 4–6 weeks.

      Questions people ask

No. They are the usual range for most patients. Your tooth, your X-ray and how quickly you heal can make it one visit more or less. Dr. Atre tells you the real plan at the first visit.

87180 58480, the number on the clinic's Google listing and board. The board also lists a landline, 0731 408 7485.

Only by appointment. Call or WhatsApp during the week to fix a Sunday time.

No. Atre's Dental Clinic is on Footi Kothi Road, in Prince Plaza 7 opposite Annapurna Sweets. Annapurna Road is a different street with a different clinic.

The tooth is numbed first, so most people feel pressure rather than pain, a lot like a long filling. The tooth may feel sore for a day or two afterwards.

It depends on the tooth and the material, so the clinic tells you after the check-up. Please ask on the phone or at your visit.
